2016 Literary Lunch

Article Written:

On 7 December, sixtyone member and friends enjoyed a Christmas lunch at Middleport Pottery with a most interesting talk from Joan Walley (retired MP for Burslem).

Literary Lunch 2016 We were joined by the Patron of the Society, The Lord Mayor of Stoke on Trent, Mr Anthony Monday and his wife Pauline.

Catherine Burgass posted the following on the Facebook Page.

Joan Walley at the Literary Lunch yesterday linked Bennett, the regeneration of Burslem and environmental protection. Bennett is difficult to recruit to the latter as he frequently extols the aesthetic effects of carbon emissions! In Anna of the Five Towns he also stoutly defends man’s disfigurement of nature: ‘Here, indeed, is nature repaid for some of her notorious cruelties. She imperiously bids man sustain and reproduce himself, and this is one of the places wherein the very art of obedience he wounds and mistreats her.’
