Entries are now open for the Arnold Bennett Literary Award 2020

It is the fourth year the international book prize has been organised by the Arnold Bennett Society in partnership with The Sentinel.

Entry is also open to writers living anywhere in the world if their work deals with life in North Staffordshire.
Past winners include Guardian columnist Charlotte Higgins, who was born and raised in Newcastle Under Lyme, novelist Jan Edwards and poet John Lancaster.

Freelance lecturer Morag Jones will chair the judging panel for the second year. She said: “The award was very successful last year. We had four very strong shortlisted books and we thought any one of them would have been a worthy winner. We were very pleased with the winning book, Charlotte Higgins’s The Red Thread. We are now looking forward to hopefully attracting lots of good quality entries this year.” The judges will also include Dr Catherine Burgass, Dr Leslie Powner, an honorary research fellow at Keele University and chairman of Trustees of the Arnold Bennett Society , Sentinel journalist Jenny Amphlett plus Arnold Bennett Society members and Trustees Penny Michell and Pat Marshall.

Leslie Powner said: “Since it was established we’ve had some fascinating entries. This is the fourth year and we’re looking forward to another bumper crop of excellent work.”

Jenny Amphlett added: “The Sentinel appeared in Bennett’s fiction, when he changed the newspaper’s name to The Signal, so it’s fitting that his name should live on in our pages today.

“The reputation of the literary award has grown, with more entries, and generally stronger entries, in each successive year.”

The prize is for books published during 2019. They can be any genre, fiction or non-fiction, and of any length. The books must exist in physical form, rather than purely digitally, and must have an ISBN number.

To enter, the authors should submit two hard copies of their book, together with a covering letter including their full name, address and a contact telephone number. The closing date for entries is January 31, 2020.

Entries should be posted or hand delivered to: Jenny Amphlett, Arnold Bennett Literary Award, The Sentinel, Sentinel House, Bethesda Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, ST1 3GN
